Keisha’s Miracle Makeover

Keisha’s Miracle Makeover

Keisha Knows How To #RelaxWithConfidence

Thought we didn't stand by our products? Well, you couldn't be further from the truth! Our Creative Director, Keisha decided that it was time to revise her look and chose to take the #RelaxerChallenge along with 9 other Authentic Beauties who believe in (Dr.) Miracle's! After ELEVEN years as a naturalista, she decided to go back to her roots as a relaxed and ready beauty. "You can have relaxed and healthy hair just like you can have natural and damaged hair" said Keisha when asked about her concerns with relaxer after over a decade of being chemical straightner free.

What did she love most? "The Miracle Moisture Masque left my hair feeling soft and supple. And it straightened quickly without any burn or irritation."  She suggests that users read the directions thoroughly as the Duo-Care Technology system is a new entry in the relaxer category that consumers are not yet familiar with. Over processing can still cause damage even when replenishing hair with protein, vitamins and Extra Virgin Coconut Oils.

Check below the cut for Keisha's video testimony on #MiracleRenewal and stay tuned for more transformation! Miracle Renewal is available at local beauty and barber supply stores and at our website at www.drmiracles.com

How To Care For Your Hair & Scalp When Wearing a Weave

How To Care For Your Hair & Scalp When Wearing a Weave

When wearing a weave, caring for the hair under there should be a top priority. Proper scalp maintenance will ensure that once the weave is removed, your new growth is healthy and damage is minimal.

Don't be the victim of a bad hair weave

Here are four tips to keeping your hair healthy while wearing a weave:

Loosen up the stitch

Often weaves are installed far too tightly. The tension on your follicles can cause your hair fall out. Once a follicle is permanently damaged, hair will no longer be able to grow from it. Additionally, weaves worn too tightly around the crown of the head cause the most common type of permanent hair loss in African-American women referred to as traction alopecia.

Don’t neglect your scalp

While the hair is protected from heat under the weft, the scalp is often left to fend for itself. Remember that a healthy scalp is the foundation for healthy hair. Be sure to work natural oils beneath the weave onto your scalp and massage them in. If the weave is made of human hair, getting a little product on it won’t hurt it, but synthetic hair won’t properly absorb the products, so you’ll need to be careful not to get oils on it.

Dr. Miracle's GRO OIL

Dr. Miracle’s Daily Moisturizing GRO OIL is blended with Vitamins A, D, E, Avocado and Aloe Vera to soothe and treat the scalp.

 Shampoo and Relieve Itch

This reduces the buildup of product used for styling your extensions and removes dead skin cells to help the scalp breathe.  Using Dr. Miracle’s Detoxifying Pre-Shampoo Mist in addition to your weekly wash will alleviate itchiness, lift flakes, remove impurities and exfoliate your scalp with Vitamin E, Witch Hazel and Neem Oil.

Give Your Hair a Break

Forgo extensions for 2-3 weeks between installations to allow your hair and scalp to breathe.  Visit your stylist for a trim to remove split ends and be sure to deep condition the hair and scalp. Avoid ponytails and other styles that put stress on the hair and always use a protectant when styling with heating tools.

This is Dr. Watson, Health and Wellness Advisor for Dr. Miracle’s signing off on your prescription for healthy hair. Thanks for watching.

Spring/Summer Hair Tips

Spring/Summer Hair Tips

The chill in the air is beginning to dissipate as the sun shines through for the spring/summer months. As the weather changes, so does our hair regimen. With heat waves come an increased chance for dryness and damage to the hair. Here are a few tips to keep your hair shining this season!

1.) Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize

Amp up your regular shampoo & conditioning routine by adding a steam treatment. Yes, it’s hot under that hood dryer but the steam will help open your pores and add a natural shine to your hair. Add Dr. Miracle’s Follicle Healer Deep Conditioning Treatment to intensify the process.

2.) Minimize the use of heat

Now’s the time to let your tresses roam free. Dr. Miracle’s Curl Kit is perfect for setting your hair on flexi rods (no matter the length), while applying the Weightless Moisturizing Crème, let air dry and add the Frizz Control Serum; it only takes a tiny bit to tame those curls!

3.)  Try Protective Styles

If you’re lucky the summer is all about vacations on the beach or pool parties, exercising outdoors on a hiking trail and laying out to get the perfect tan. Who really wants to think about hair? A protective style (i.e. a sew-in of extensions) can keep your natural hair protected from damage and allow you the opportunity to experiment with a new, fun look!

4.) Make 'The Big Chop'

You’ve been thinking about getting that haircut all winter long; now's the perfect time to go for it! It may be a big commitment but the effortless style and styling make it completely worth it!

The Facts About Fibroids

The Facts About Fibroids

At a recent product launch event I was asked a very interesting question by one of the editors during the panel discussion.  The young lady was a writer for a popular consumer magazine and had concerns about the use of hair relaxers and their relationship to uterine fibroids.  After responding to her question I felt it would be a good opportunity to talk about fibroids in general so those who have questions or concerns can get a better understanding of this condition.

I reviewed the current studies from the AAFP (American Academy of Family Practice). I hope it helps educate all who read this blog.

What are uterine fibroids?

Fibroids are benign growths (not cancer) in the muscular wall of the uterus. These growths can be very tiny or as large as a cantaloupe.

The incidence of uterine fibroid tumors increases as women grow older, and they may occur in more than 30 percent of women 40 to 60 years of age.

Fibroids are very common. At least 20% of women 35 years of age or older have fibroids. Many women have them without knowing it. Black women are at a higher risk (3 to 4 times higher) of having fibroids than women in other racial groups. And more likely to have symptoms caused by fibroids.

Once a fibroid is formed, it tends to grow larger until menopause, after which fibroids tend to shrink, due to the effects of estrogen.

Most women who have fibroids don't have symptoms. In other women, fibroids can cause heavy bleeding during the menstrual period. Periods may last much longer than usual.

Fibroids may also cause pain or a feeling of pressure or heaviness in the lower pelvic area (the area between the hip bones), the back or the legs. Some women have pain during sexual intercourse. Others have a constant feeling that they need to urinate. There may also be a feeling of pressure in the bowel. Some women have constipation or bloating.

Fibroids as can cause pelvic or urinary obstructive symptoms, infertility, and pregnancy loss.

How are fibroids treated?

There are many treatment options for women who have fibroids. Fibroids that don’t cause any symptoms may not need treatment. For fibroids that do cause symptoms, treatment options include:

  •  Medicine
  •  Noninvasive or minimally invasive procedures
  • Traditional surgery

Your doctor will help you figure out the best treatment option for your fibroid.  Treatments based on individual patient characteristics.

I hope this review of fibroids is helpful in education you all.  As to the answer to the young woman’s question that started this conversation I say this:

I did indeed find a hypothesis study that surveyed women who had used hair relaxers about the history with fibroids.  The most important thing to remember is that studies like this are not showing cause but rather attempting to determine a possible link.  In it is my opinion that the above mention study along with another that attempted to see the link between the lactose intolerance to risk of fibroids, only reinforces what we already know.  African American women are more likely to develop fibroids.  African American women also relax their hair and have a higher incidence of being lactose intolerance.  The fact that the African American women use relaxers and are lactose intolerant most likely has nothing to do with the development of uterine fibroids.  I’m Dr. Watson and I approve this message.

Is it really your relaxer? Medical Professionals say "No".

In good health,

James Watson

4 Food Families for Phenomenal Hair

4 Food Families for Phenomenal Hair

Creating a healthy lifestyle that is anchored in a balanced diet rich in a variety of whole foods is the most direct way to long, strong shiny hair. Authentically beautiful hair and skin is available to you in the aisles of your local grocery store. I’ve pulled together four beauty foods that will give your body all of the nutrients, vitamins and minerals needed to cultivate healthy hair and scalp.

Leafy green veggies have always been your mom’s favorite…and you never wanted to eat them. Now that you are making your own food choices, you should take a second listen to mom’s advice. Vegetables like spinach, broccoli and kale contain an abundance of Vitamins A & C which are needed to produce the scalp’s natural oils. You can also find a healthy dose of Iron and Calcium to boot.

GO GREEN!

Hair is made up mostly of protein so if you really want a long, thick, healthy hair your diet should ensure the adequate amount of protein is being consumed. Soy, tofu, chicken, beef and pork, nuts and seeds all provide reliable sources of protein. Try to stick to grilled and baked meats…your best hair life starts with your health.

TEAM PROTEIN

Sure you’ve heard about miracle hair and nail vitamins that tout inches of growth almost overnight. Authentic beauties should do their very best to ingest their “supplements” the natural way. Loaded with Iron, Zinc and one of the most important building blocks of healthy hair, Biotin, beans really can seem magic.  With so many choices from kidney to black to Lima and every variety in between, adding beans to your weekly menu will give your hair and your dishes a new flair.

BEANS, GLORIOUS BEANS

Good fats are a must in any healthy eating plan. Foods like Walnuts, fish and canola oil are indelibly connected to scalp health.  Because our bodies don’t actually produce Omega-3 Fatty Acids, it is a must that we add it to our bodies through our food. Omega-3 Fatty Acids have been shown to alleviate dry scalp, improve the elasticity of the hair and ultimately assist in growing longer, thicker hair.

OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS

The next time you head to the grocery store, remember to let nature feed your authentic beauty with its cornucopia of vitamins, minerals and nutrients right in your grocer’s aisle!

To your best hair life,

Dr. Watson

4 Fixes for a Dry Scalp

4 Fixes for a Dry Scalp

It may sound cliché, but it is a fact that “beauty” starts from the inside. Taking care to make healthy decisions creates beauty as a byproduct. A manageable, strong, shiny, full head of hair is no exception to the rule- it starts at the scalp.

Dry scalp is the enemy of beautiful hair but creating a fertile environment for healthy hair growth can be achieved by incorporating a few small changes into your Healthy Hair #TreatMEntPlan.

Tip #1: Water Works: The basis to healthy skin and scalp is water. Drinking 64 ounces of water a day is a must not just for scalp and skin but for all functions of the body. It helps to oxygenate cells, regulate temperature and keep your largest organ –the skin- moisturized from the inside out.

Tip #2: Boost Your “B”: Vitamin B6 also known as “the beauty vitamin” is a vital partner in the quest for your best hair life. The vitamin provides the body with collagen, antioxidants and oils that directly affect the health of hair and skin. Helping to balance hormones, boost the immune system and prevent skin disorders such as eczema and psoriasis, B6 is an obvious ally. Try foods rich in protein such as poultry, fish and eggs to increase your B6 intake naturally.

Tip #3: Condition for a Cause: When scalp doesn’t produce the proper amount of sebum (the natural oils of the scalp), a weekly deep conditioning treatment that contain natural oils can assist in replenishing the missing oils. *RX4Style: Dr. Miracle’s Double Deep Moisturizing Masque is a weekly intensive treatment blended with Olive, Sunflower and Jojoba Oils to infuse oils into the scalp and help hair’s manageability and elasticit

Tip #4: Stimulate Your Scalp: Few things get the blood flowing like a massage. The manual stimulation of the scalp can help to create a fertile ground for healthy hair growth by awakening blood cells to increase its activity just beneath the surface. *RX4Style: Adding Dr. Miracle’s Scalp Care Herbal Tonic to your weekly scalp massage adds to the effectiveness. Blended with grapefruit and oil leaf extracts, the tonic conditions and moisturizes scalp and hair increasing elasticity and shine.
